ABSTRACT
General objective: Analyze the sexual orientation in adolescents and its association with demographic, socio-behavior, and sexual variables.
Material and methods: Transversal, descriptive and correlation study that includes high schools students (9
th to 12
th) in three educational establishments in Concepcion, Chile, 2007. The sample was 360 students, who responded to a self-administered, anonymous, and confidential questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the program SAS, version 9.1.
Results: 89% of the adolescents declare to be heterosexual and 11% self-identified as homosexual, bisexual or unsure of their sexual orientation (HBU). The bad relation to their mother is associated to the not heterosexual orientation of the surveyed males (OR = 0.07). Consumption of illicit substances (amphetamines, crack and marihuana) is higher in HBU adolescents. In contrast with heterosexual youth, the HBU initiate sexual behavior at an earlier age (p = 0.0103) and 86% did not use any birth control method in their first sexual relation (p = 0.0067). HBU adolescents have had more sexual contacts with persons of the same sex than their heterosexual peers (p ≤ 0.0001, OR = 11.70). Additionally, not being heterosexual was associated with a higher percentage of abuse (p ≤ 0.0001, OR = 11.61).
Conclusion: Youth with a homosexual, bisexual or unsure sexual orientation tend to present more risky sexual conducts and to have an adverse social and family background that was characterized by abuse as well as a poor relation with their mother. They also consume illicit substances in a greater proportion in comparison with heterosexual adolescents.
