ABSTRACT
The distal portion of the leg and the heel presents a scarce quantity of local and regional tissues available for reconstruction in case of trauma or illness that require repairing of the skin cover; this enables the exposure of frail tissue or osteosynthesis material which can lead to worsening of the underlying disease. It is important to have reliable fasciocutaneous flaps to solve this type of problems. The reverse flow sural flap has been widely used to cover skin of these areas. At the Dr. Gustavo Baz Prada General Hospital eleven reverse sural flaps for skin cover of traumatic injuries on the distal third of the leg and the heel were carried out with good results. In 6 cases there were no complications (54%), four cases had minimal flap loss (36%) and one case had a complete flap loss (9%). Our results show that reverse sural flaps are a valid alternative for the covering of wounds of the distal portion of lower extremities, without the need of microsurgical support and minimal morbility.
