ABSTRACT
Background: Chronic constipation has become a frequent cause of medical care Worldwide. In this paper we present the efficacy of cecocolopexia for the surgical management of chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome when these diseases are associated with mobile cecum and ptosis of the transverse colon.
Methods: In this study we retrospectively analyzed the surgical care of 297 patients diagnosed with Chronic Constipation and Irritable Bowel Syndrome with movile cecum detected by means of a Cecography and sequential Cecocolography. All patients were operated on, with previous consent, between February 1999 and June 2011 in Centro Medico Antillano, Hospital Padre Billini, amongst other centers in Santo Domingo, Dominincan Republic. The surgical technique in 275 patients was the Cecopexy. We carried out the Cecocolopexy on 28 patients with Rodriguez Bonet technique of which 6 correspond to the re-intervention of the previous group.
Results: Cecopexy was performed in 275 patients. We observed that chronic constipation was solved in 83% of the patients and symptoms disappeared in 82% of the cases with this surgical procedure. Amongst the cases in which Cecopexy does not offer satisfying results are those in which symptoms referred to are associated with Ptosis of the transverse colon; which can be diagnosed with use of Sequential Cecocolography.
Conclusions: Our technique of Cecocoplexy performed in 28 patients with mobile cecum and ptosis of transverse colon provide excellent results since constipation was solved in all patients and symptoms associated with constipation disappeared in more than 89% of the cases.
