ABSTRACT
Background. Congenital variants of the pancreas are seen in approximately 10% of the general population. Most individuals who present them are asymptomatic; however, a significant number of them present symptoms ranging from chronic abdominal pain to recurrent episodes of pancreatitis. In the diagnostic approach to patients with abdominal pain it is increasingly common to request sectional image studies, and therefore it is of vital importance to know the description of radiological findings and the contribution of such variants in the pathogenesis of abdominal pain.
Purpose. Describe the clinical characteristics and sectional image findings of the most common congenital variants of the pancreas.
Material and methods. A retrospective study that included 13 patients with unequivocal findings, by sectional imaging, of congenital variants of the pancreas. Clinical antecedents were investigated and definitive cholangiographic studies were performed.
Results. In 61.5% of patients with congenital variants of the pancreas the reason for the sectional image studio was abdominal pain. In 9 patients (69.2%) pancreas divisum was identified, in 2 (15.4%) annular pancreas; there was one case of ectopic pancreas in umbilical scar topography and another with ansa pancreatica (7.7%, respectively).
Conclusions. Pancreas divisum was the congenital variant most commonly observed followed by annular pancreas. Of the population studied, 70% presented symptoms at the time of diagnosis for congenital variant of the pancreas, and computer assisted tomography of the abdomen was the principal diagnostic method used.
