Stereotactic core-needle breast biopsies. Experiment at CMN 20 de Noviembre, ISSSTE

ABSTRACT

Purpose. Report the experiment with stereotactic coreneedle breast biopsy.
Material and methods. Stereotactic core-needle biopsies were taken from 58 lesions. The results were validated with excisional biopsy or mastectomy in 17 lesions. Forty-one lesions were radiologically and histologically correlated or patients were given image follow-up for at least 18 months.
Results. The histological diagnosis with stereotactic coreneedle biopsy was possible in 58 lesions with 91% sensitivity for diagnosing breast cancer and 100% specificity. Minor complications occasionally arose during the procedure.
Conclusion. Stereotactic core-needle breast biopsy is precise enough to obtain histological samples of lesions observed mammography and ultrasound studies, and the patient’s therapeutic plan can be changed and expedited accordingly.
