ABSTRACT
Objective: Determine the usefulness of the tomography in the diagnosis of acute diverticulitis, its staging in tomography findings according to the Minnesota scale as well as its correlation with surgery medical treatment.
Material and methods: A retrospective, descriptive study was carried out, where initial clinical diagnosis clinical cases were analyzed from 154 patients with probable diverticulitis for later analysis of the Computed Tomography (CAT) of abdomen and pelvis of these patients in the period July 2007 to July 2009 at the Hospital San Jose Tec in Monterrey, to establish the diagnosis and disease severity degree according to the Minnesota scale.
Results: 154 patients with diagnosis of diverticulitis were included, confirmed by CAT in 110 patients (71.4%) and 44 (28.6%) without the above. According to symptoms, patients were classified according to the Minnesota scale and according to the diagnostic treatment was determined: surgery, medication or Interventional Radiology.
Conclusions: CAT offers valuable information on diagnosis, staging, and treatment of diverticulitis option, pictures an actual scenario on the severity of the disease according to the topographic stratification according to the Minnesota scale, since it importantly affects surgical indication avoiding unnecessary surgery, delays in the same or percutaneous treatment.
