ABSTRACT
In this work the early and late complications of the inferior pedicle technique in reduction mammaplasty are identified retrospectively in 186 patients operated for bilateral reduction mammaplasty with inferior pedicle technique at the Hospital de Especialidades Centro Médico Nacional “La Raza” of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social between March 1988 and December 1996. The average of age was 34.5 years, the average of the distance between the medial clavicular line and the areolar-nipple complex was 31.6 cm, and the average of glandular tissue resected was 980 g. A total of 36 patients had complications (19.1%): haematoma 0.5%, pedicle and/or areola-nipple complex necrosis 1.6 %, dehiscence of surgical wound 6.4%, fat necrosis 1% and loss of sensitivity in the areola-nipple complex 1.6%, hypertrophic scars 7%, dermoid cyst in 0.5% and pseudoptosis in 0.5%. We concluded that the inferior pedicle technique is versatile and safe in almost every stage of mammary hypertrophy, and the patients' satisfaction to volume and shape overcomes the worry of residual scars. Complications are minimal and the areolar-nipple complex sensitivity and breastfeeding are preserved.
