ABSTRACT
Reconstructive procedures in patients with congenital or acquired deformities of the head and neck represent a management challenge. Over the last five years we have been using microsurgery to achieve less morbidity and better results compared to traditional procedures. The main objective is to make a retrospective analysis of the microsurgical procedures for head and neck reconstruction performed in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at the Hospital General de Mexico and report the chosen procedure, the aesthetic and functional results as well as its complications. Clinical files of patients operated with microsurgery procedures between January 1994 and December 1998 were reviewed, with a register of surgical antecedents, preoperative diagnosis, preoperative studies, selection of the procedure, intraoperative records, operating time and complications. The result showed forty microsurgical procedures for head and neck reconstruction were performed on thirty-eight patients between 8 and 62 years old. The most frequent diagnosis was burn sequelae and the most employed procedure the forearm radial flap. The most important complication was the complete loss of the flap.
