ABSTRACT
Settings: An addiction is a chronic and recurrent disease that is characterized by the presence of a compulsive behavior. Compulsion to consume substances (either legal or illegal) is called dependence. This kind of behavior is frequently seen in general population. In Mexico, 5.3% of the adult population had used an illicit substance at least once.
Objective: To review the available information about the consumption of illegal substances under the vision of the Anesthesiologists and the specialist in Pain and Palliative Medicine.
Results: Despite the setting in which the patient with an addiction is present, an individualized approach is mandatory. Identification of the specific substance of addiction may promote the detection of potentially hazardous clinical situations that may increase the anesthetic risk. In addition the physician must consider that these subjects may consume higher doses of any opioid mediction during the postoperative period.
