ABSTRACT
Introduction: In Mexico the incidence of breast cancer only looks overcome by the cervicouterine cancer, the mean age of women that suffer it is between the 40 and 54 years old. Breast cancer is an example of not preventable pathology and where the only way of decreasing mortality is through its early detection, adequate and opportune handling, so that the mammography at present pacienconstitutes the best available proof for the detection and opportune diagnosis of breast cancer.
Materials and methods: A retrospective study at the Hospital General de México which files of patients who attended from January 1 to December 31, 2007 at the Mastography service for carrying out a screening mastography, were reviewed. 51 patients with a mean age were selected between the 33 and 78 years old.
Results: The most common incidence of palpable lesions found in the age group of 49 to 50 years (69.2%). The more frequent not palpable lesions were nodules associated to micro-calcifications (38.4%), followed by the micro-calcifications and nodules (19.2%).
Conclusions: Mastography is the selection method for the identification of breast cancer in asymptomatic patients, besides being the selection exam in the mammary screening, due to its high sensitivity (70-90%).
