ABSTRACT
The massive bleeding was defined as the loss of 20% of blood volume and may be associated with surgical procedures as well as traumatic events, contributing to the mortality of the same up to 30%. The treatment of massive bleeding requires a multidisciplinary team that allows to provide supportive therapy to the patient in critical condition. Measures to be taken is the massive transfusion of blood components. Massive transfusion is defined as the transfusion of up to 10 erythrocyte concentrates or more, equivalent to a blood volume replacement in a span of 24 hours. The administration of such a quantity of blood and its components involves a series of side effects that are addressed in this work, including the high mortality related to massive transfusion.
