ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the effectiveness of Marshall Classification for CT Scan (Computed Tomography), related treatment and disability.
Material and methods: An observational, cross-sectional, retrospective and descriptive study including 40 paediatric patients was carried out. Registered data were: sex, age, schooling, mechanism of injury, Glasgow score, computed tomography (Marshall’s Classification) and treatment. Statistical analysis included central tendency measurement and chi-square test for variables association.
Results: 40 patients were enrolled, 60% were female and 40% male; the most common (50%) mechanism of injury was fallings at home. Children in elemental school were the most frequently injured. Half of the traumatisms was considered slight; 15%, severe and only 10% required neurosurgical treatment; 11 children underwent complications in the long term. The correlation between Marshall’s classification and prognosis did not show a significant difference; therefore Glasgow’s score lesser than 8 had correlation with disabilities development (p = 0.014).
Conclusion: Glasgow score is the best clinical evaluation for head injury, whereas Marshall scale does not have any prognosis value.
