ABSTRACT
Objectives: To know the primary caregiver characteristics based on demographic, emotional and physical profile and the institutional and family support networks. Additionally, to identify and obtain the results from the primary caregiver overload evaluation.
Material and methods: In an observative, descriptive, transversal and prospective study two different quizzes, the caregiver profile quiz and the caregiver overload scale quiz, were applied to primary caregiver during November and December 2006 in the ISSSTE Family Medical Clinic Dr. Ignacio Chávez.
Results: 60 patients were included in this study. The caregiver profile identified was a fifty-years-old woman with a rank of 38. Twelve patients presented slight overload (20%) and seven intense overload (11.7%). Relation of results between the emotional profile variable and the primary caregiver overload variable. Statistical significant differences were obtained when the patient told about insomnia (
p=0.04). Relation of results between the family and institutional support networks variable and the caregiver overload variable. Statistical significant differences were obtained in accordance to the treat from the ill to the caregiver (
p=0.02).
Conclusions: In the study s population, the primary caregiver profile is women, wives, housewives or daughters. It shows few difference with other previously reported studies. The Family Doctor must identify and recognize the possible physical, psychic, and psychosomatic symptoms in order to prevent the presence of overload.
