ABSTRACT
Nutritional support, either parenteral or enteral, has been part of medical practice since several decades. This technique is a high-cost and riskful procedure reserved to special cases, only 10% of patients requiring nutritional support. Indications for parenteral support are: to improve nutritional status, to prevent and treat micronutrient deficiencies, to provide enough nutrients according to the illness; to avoid complications related to technique of administration and to improve prognosis of the patient. This is a literature review about parenteral nutrition, its indications and calculations, requirements of macronutrients and micronutrients, and procedure.
