ABSTRACT
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus and risk factors; to establish a reference frame to do comparisons; and to evaluate operative methodology of the study of non transmissible chronic diseases requiring follow-up.
Participants and methods: This is an observational study, in which 33 nurses applied a survey to 1,300 men and women older than 25 years, at ISSSTE in Mexico City.
Results: 89.7% of interviewed patients had hereditary and familiar antecedents of diabetes mellitus, 94.7% had arterial hypertension, 91.9% had ischaemic cardiopathy or myocardium infarct, 85.5% had cerebrovascular disease and 78.7% had some type of cancer. From all patients, 25.8% were smokers, and 70.1% had at least one non transmissible chronic disease. 71.5% of the population had a body mass index ≥ 25.
Conclusions: These results show a high prevalence of non transmissible chronic diseases and risk factors in this population, especially overweight and obesity, arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus. There was an inverse relation between literacy, scholarship and social level with the prevalence of diabetes. Data suggest that it is necessary to analyze risk factors of diabetes, mainly nutritional ones, in order to establish prevention measures.
