ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the functionality of the elderly with the scales of measurement, and to relate them with the quality of life.
Materials and methods: Descriptive study with probabilistic sampling of 225 elderly of the Clinic of Familiar Medicine Dr. Ignacio Chavez, Institute of Security and Social Services of Workers of the State. Under the acceptance signature of informed consent, questionnaires were done about the functionality for: basic activities of daily life (Katz), instrumental activities of daily life (Lawton-Brody), and balance and walking, the Kruskall-Wallis test was used, with a significant level of 0.05, with the program SPSS, V12.
Results: For basic activities 27.1% of the patients presented low inability and 1.3% invalidity. For instrumental activities, 16% presented dependence and 15.6% with deterioration. For balance and walking, 34.7% presented low risk of falling, and 16% high risk. A significant statistic association was presented between the degree of functionality and the bad quality of life.
Conclusions: For the three scales of functionality, one out of three patients presented some degree of dysfunction, similar to that reported by other authors. Factors were identified, wich determine that the less functionality, the more deterioration of quality of life.
