ABSTRACT
It is a fact that the survival of the extreme premature has increased. Among the factors that have influenced are: The treatment with prenatal steroids. Lung surfactant. Conventional and high frequency ventilation. Newborns that are less than 25 weeks of gestation have a major risk of death and disability; newborns within 25-30 weeks have better chances of survival, but still a representative percentage presents collateral problems. The main handicap in newborns that are 25-10 weeks, is the alteration of the brain development or mental retarded, followed by cerebral palsy blindness and deafness respectively.
If the birth of a newborn preterm, less than 30 weeks and particularly less than 25 weeks, is imminent, the parents must be advised about the probabilities of survival and the possible handicaps. It that case, it would also be important the team work considerations between the obstetrics and pediatricians about the birth route, newborn resuscitation, treatment with prenatal steroids and use of lung surfactant and intensive care. All these to reduce complications and to take special care of this group of newborns to identify on time disabilities and give them an early treatment.
