ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the frequency of acute anemia and potential risk associated with blood transfusion in patients admitted to the intensive care unit of Hospital Regional General Ignacio Zaragoza.
Patients and Method: A prospective, longitudinal, descriptive study; which included 50 patients, 35 men and 15 women with a mean age of 52.1 years, with acute anemia and blood transfusion from March 1, 2008 to September 1, 2008. Patients were taken blood volume cytometry for four weeks, collecting data for hemoglobin, packages and comparing globular transfusions, SOFA and APACHE II scales.
Results: At admission: Average hemoglobin 11.5 g/dL, average number of globular packets transfused 0.3, average Scale SOFA 3.6 and average APACHE II scale 15.7. All variables showed a difference between patients with acute anemia and blood transfusion on admission to the ICU of the Hospital Zaragoza and subsequent weeks with statistical significance.
Conclusion: These results correspond to the literature in patients with acute anemia and blood transfusion; the number of packets is a globular transfused independent predictive factor of adverse clinical outcomes. It is vital to evaluate alternative treatment for anemia that minimize the need for blood transfusion and improve on life, which is corroborated by this study.
