ABSTRACT
Telomeres are important structures to cellular functions, because they participate in diverse cellular processes such as meiosis or transcriptional regulation. Telomeres are heterochromatin regions with unique characteristics because they form a T-loop at the ends; this structure is maintained and protected by telomeric specific proteins Telomeric Repeat binding Factor 1 and 2 (TRF1, TRF2) and other proteins such as those involved in double-stranded DNA repair. Recently, one of the telomere functions is being more studied: the transcriptional regulation of close telomeric genes. The importance of this function might involve in the cellular senescence and mediate the propensity to human disease such as cancer.
