Nutritional anthropometric diagnosis of overweight and obesity in the medicine students, Carabobo university

ABSTRACT
The overweight and the obesity have been increased progressively in the young people during the last years in all the countries of the world.
Objetive: To evaluate the frequency of overweight and obesity in the Medicine students (host Valencia), Carabobo University, Venezuela.
Material and methods: Investigation descriptive, analytic, cross-sectional, nonexperimental type. The sample was constituted by 120 students, with ages between 18 and 26 years old, that attended of 3° to 6° year, 30 students of every year. Anthropometric measures of weight, height, circumference of waist and hip were made, nutritional diagnosis by Body Mass Index (BMI), interrogated physical activity, alcohol and tobacco consumption.
Results: Of evaluated people 68 they were of feminine sex and 52 masculine sex. Overweight/Obesity in 33,3% of the people was, 51,88% (masculine) and 19,11% (feminine); 72,49% showed sedentary (similar in both sexes); the alcohol consumption was positive in 68,3% (masculine 88,4% and feminine 52,9%); to smoke cigarettes was positive in 34.16% (masculine 42.3% and feminine 27.9%). When comparing BMI between 3° and 6° year, was a significant difference in masculine sex (p ‹ 0,05), since in 3° year it was of 24.59 Kg/m2 ± 4,22 and in 6° year of 27,41 Kg/m2 ± 4,63.
Conclusions: A high frequency of overweight/obesity was determined, sedentary as well as the consumption of alcohol and cigarettes in the evaluated people.
