ABSTRACT
Introduction: the permanence and functioning of the vascular access depends strongly on the active participation of the patient and family. Ithas not been explored In the hemodiaylisis unit. Objective: to identify the patients' level knowledge about self-care of the hemodialysis vascular access.
Methodology: a comparative study conducted in the Hemodialysis Unit was done. Chronic and elderly patients were included. Patients with surrogate hemodialysis and permanent departures were eliminated from the program. Two instruments were designed and validated, one for patients with catheter Mahurkar (group I), consisting of 27 items and one for patients with internal arterio venous fistula (group II), composed of 29. The instruments were validated and Spearman test by Brown was performed.
Results: we interviewed 36 patients, 24 had catheter and 12 fistula, 47.2% females and 52.8% male, 52.8% were married, 33.3% with elementary schooling and high school in about 30.6%. The average permanence in hemodialysis was eigth months (range: 1 to 42) in group I and in the group II three (range:2 to 120) . The 45.8% of patients in group I presented a very low level of knowledge and in 83.4% of group II.
Conclusions: patients had a very low level of knowledge about selfmanagement of vascular access, which jeopardizes their adequate functioning and opens the possibility of further complications.
