ABSTRACT
Antecedents: The incidence of the bone tumors in the pediatric age has been increased in the last years, which has promoted the development of surgical techniques directed to the preservation of the extremities. The use of an endoprosthesis entails for the patient diverse complications that can be pronounced early and/or delayed. The objective of this study was to describe the complications associated to the use of nonconventional endoprosthesis «RC-10» for bone tumors.
Methods: Cross-sectional study of one cohort of 32 pediatric patients with bone tumor to whose was placed an endoprosthesis «RC-10» between 2003 and 2008. The infections or fistulas, loss of the prosthesis by amputation/disarticulation or recurrence and mechanical faults of the endoprosthesis were taken into account. The results were analyzed with SPSS 16.0
Results: The complications of 32 patients with diverse bone tumors in different corporal segments are described. Infections (21.9%); loss of the prosthesis by amputation/disarticulation or recurrence (6.3%) and mechanical faults of the endoprosthesis (34.4%).
Conclusions: The results in this study agree with the literature respect to the presentation of complications due to the use of an endoprosthesis.
