ABSTRACT
background. N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis are sexually transmitted agents, which may cause infertility and pelvic inflamatory diseases. The epidemiological study of these bacteria is relevant among young people, to assess the frecuency and risk factors associated with the infections they elicit.
material and methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out among male and female students of the Morelos State University, during 2002. College students signed informed consent, answered self-applied questionnaires, and provided urine samples to detect
N. gonorrhoeae and
C. trachomatis by ligase chain reaction.
results. A total of 385 students participated. The age at sexual debut was 16.8 years old among males, and 18.4 years old among females. Not a single case of
N. gonorrhoeae was detected, and overall
C. trachomatis prevalence was 1.04%; college students with four or more sexual partners presented 6.1%; students exchanging sex for money had 10%; and among students with same sex partners
C. trachomatis infection was detected at 5.9%.
conclusions. The prevalence of these sexually transmitted infections was relatively low. However, risky sexual behaviors among college students were detected, and these characteristics could play an important role in spreading several sexually transmitted agents.
