Temporal lobe surgery in treat behavioral neuropediatric

ABSTRACT

To treat behavioral problems in children, frequently associated with convulsive crisis, 10 cases were treated with temporal lobe surgery and in one case, left hemispherectomy was carried out. The procedures were performed at the Instituto Nacional de Neurologia de Mexico (Mexico’s National Institute of Neurology). The patients were referred to the Pediatric Surgical Ward by the Psychiatric and the Neurological Departaments after medical treatment proved to be of no avail. Prior to the surgical treatment, EEG, pneumoencephalogram, angiogram and psychological tests were done. Especially worthy of attention were case No. 5 which was considered a psychopath prior to surgery; case No 7 which had a radical temporal resection behind the great vein of Labbe in view of the findings of electrocorticography; and lastly, case No. 11 where postsurgical follow up lasted 10 years.
