ABSTRACT
Objective: To demonstrate that simple apical injection is more effective in achieving anesthesia compared with bilateral basal technique in ultrasound-guided transrectal biopsy of the prostate.
Methods: The present study included sixty patients having undergone ultrasound-guided transrectal biopsy of the prostate in the time frame of February 1st to May 30th, 2009. Patients were randomly divided into two groups. Group A (n = 24) underwent biopsy after receiving simple apical block using 5 mL of lidocaine at 2% (single application) and Group B (n = 27) after receiving bilateral basal block using 10 mL of lidocaine at 2% (bilateral application). Pain was compared at transducer insertion, anesthetic application, and when biopsy samples were taken.
Results: Both techniques were effective in reducing pain at the moment of prostate biopsy. Mean pain at transducer insertion was 2.29 + 0.85 in Group A and 2.33 + 0.87 Group B, mean pain at anesthetic application was 1.67 + 0.63 in Group A and 1.89 + 0.69 in Group B, and mean pain at sample collection was 1.71 + 0.62 in Group A and 2.07 + 1.03 in Group B.
Conclusions: There was no statistically significant difference between the two techniques. However, simple apical block technique was more effective as an anesthetic for carrying out ultrasound-guided transrectal biopsy of the prostate.
