ABSTRACT
Introduction: The measuring of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) is a new follow-up modality in the critical patient since its increase is related to the development of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and the abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS), the latter also associated to a significant increase in morbidity and mortality. Recent advances in the knowledgeof ACS physiopathology have had a high impact on the early diagnosis of ACS and on implementing different therapeutic alternatives from a non-invasive approach to decompressive laparotomy.
Case: A 57 year-old patient was laparotomized due to intestinal perforation with septic shock. The patient developed IAH that led to ACS with pulmonary and renal dysfunction which improved with decompressive laparotomy.
Conclusion: IAP measurement is a useful tool for the early diagnosis and treatment of IAH and ACS, thus preventing complications. The aim of this report is to update practitioners on the importance of IAH and ACS in critical patients.
