ABSTRACT
Introduction: The incidence of congenital malformations ranges from 3 to 5% in neonates and increases to 7.8% when babies are exposed to teratogens, infections or when they suffer a chronic or degenerative disease. Objective: To assess the frequency and type of congenital malformations detected in neonates during a 4 year period in a General Hospital. Methods: A descriptive study reviewing the records of live or dead neonates born with a congenital malformation. We analyzed, the prevalence, the age of the mother and father, the number of pregnancies, gestational age, gender, and birth weight and type of delivery. Descriptive statistic was used.
Results: In 22,327 live or dead births, 416 (18.6 per 1000) neonates had one malformation; because some had two or more defects, the total number of malformations was 664 (29.7 per 1000). The most common malformations were cleft lip and palate in 52 cases, followed by ear appendices in 33, and Down syndrome in 31. The systems most frequently affected were muscle-skeletal in 277, skin in 80 and central nervous system in 77.
Conclusions: The prevalence in this study of 29.7 per 1,000 births is higher than that reported in other series.
