ABSTRACT
Introduction: Infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is associated with a wide spectrum of extrahepatic manifestations which include those related to systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases.
Objective: To describe the clinical manifestations of rheumatic and autoimmune markers in patients with HCV infection.
Patients and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional. We evaluated patients diagnosed with HCV infection. A questionnaire was applied based on clinical criteria of the American College of Rheumatology for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and scleroderma. Descriptive statistics were used and χ
2 and/or Fisher’s exact test.
Results: We studied 95 patients (49 women and 46 men). The average age was 47.1 years. Clinical data: arthralgia and myalgia (55%), blood disorders (13%), xerophthalmia (5%), xerostomia (5%), arthritis (4%), oral ulcers (4%), photosensitivity (3%) malar rash (2%). Ninety serologic tests were conducted, of which rheumatoid factor was found positive in 15% and antinuclear antibodies in 33%.
Conclusions: The results suggest that rheumatic symptoms and autoimmune markers are common in patients with HCV infection and these should not be dismissed in their evaluation.
