ABSTRACT
Background: Among the risk factors for developing breast cancer is a diet rich in fatty acids (FA), which has been the cause of scientific controversy.
Methods: Using a case-control design, consecutive assignment included 100 women diagnosed with breast cancer attending the outpatient Oncology Service and 100 women, Nutrition Service of the Hospital General de Occidente (HGO), Ministry of Health, Mexico. Food frequency was performed to quantify the amount of saturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated based on each food.
Results: The intake of saturated fatty acids was higher in 80% of women with cancer than in controls (p ‹ 0.001). The odds ratio (OR) was positive in 6 saturated fatty foods, with an OR of 5.97 for meat and lard. Two of 5 foods with a predominance of monounsaturated showed negative association. There was no difference between the total intakes of polyunsaturated fat in both groups.
Conclusions: A higher intake of saturated fatty acids in breast cancer patients than controls in the study.
