ABSTRACT
Ectopic pregnancy is the emergency that occurs most often during the first trimester of pregnancy. Increases in the availability and use of new hormonal markers associated with advances in ultrasound have changed the diagnostic approach in a patient with bleeding and pain in the first trimester of pregnancy. The methods of choice for the correct diagnosis are ultrasound and quantification of β-hCG. The appropriate treatment for patients with unruptured ectopic pregnancy may include expectant management, medical management with methotrexate or surgery. Surgical treatment is appropriate if ruptured ectopic pregnancy is suspected and if the patient is hemodynamically unstable.
