ABSTRACT
Background: The salivary gland tumors are uncommon in patients of pediatric age, less than 2% before the 16 years of life. The majority of articles report short series of cases.
Objective: To determine the frequency, histological type, site of presentation and sex distribution of the diagnosed tumors of salivary glands in the University Hospital in pediatric patients.
Material and methods: A descriptive retrospective study of all the tumors of salivary glands majors and minors, was done under 18 years during the period of January 1998 to July 2009.
Results: Of the 122,291 surgical ones analyzed during this period, 0.082% (101 cases) corresponded to tumors of salivary glands, and 11 cases appeared in minors of 18 years, the average of age for the presentation of the tumors of salivary glands was of 12 years, the 45.5% were benign tumors and 54.5% malignant. The most frequent tumor was the pleomorfic adenoma. The parotida gland was the most common site of location (73%).
Conclusions: Our results in age incidence, frequency by histological type and affected gland agree with the reported in literature, we have a slight major frequency of malignant tumors.
