ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine de prevalence of geriatric syndromes among women living in a residence for the elder and compare them to those in a hospital in a geriatric ward.
Patients and methods: Descriptive, transversal study of older women living in a residence to which a geriatric assessment was performed.
Results: 171 patients were included, with an average of 84 years of age, all of them women. The assessment permitted identifying 23 geriatric syndromes. The most frequent of them was foot disease with a prevalence of 93%, the least frequent where fecal incontinence, delirium, hydroelectrolitic disturbances and abuse or mistreatment with no report of any of them. Comparatively, falls, depression and cognitive impairment had the same prevalence in the residence and the hospital.
Conclusions: Geriatric Syndromes prevalence in our population is determined by socioeconomical status, culture and age. Knowing the frecuency of the main geriatric syndromes allows us to develop educational programs, health promotion programs, physical activity programs or individual interventions that could improve quality of live of one or every member of the community.
