ABSTRACT

Pneumatosis cystoide intestinalis (PCI) is a rather infrequent disease characterized by multiple intramural sacs of gas in any section of the gastrointestinal tract and occasionally the mesentery. Many etiologies have been proposed regarding its origin. Several theories suggest that air intake by the intestinal submucosa occurs through a minute perforation. On the other hand in more than 85% of the cases there is an additional systemic disease. This case substantiates the view that PCI is a consequence of a perforation of the colonic wall.
