ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the impact of a Podiatry workshop on habits and clinical stage of type 2 diabetic foot at a Family Medicine unit.
Material and Methods: We conducted a comparative cohort in monitoring two groups of subjects with diabetes. One group participated in a Podiatry workshop including theoretical training that consisted of practice, and another group received individual theoretical indications. One year after the interventions, we assessed changes in patterns of their foot care and explored these using the classification of Wagner and monofilament for detecting neuropathy. These results were compared with those obtained in the previous year and between the two groups.
Results: Of the 200 patients with diabetes, 100 were workshop attendees and 100 received individual theoretical indications. Average age was 61 and 60 years respectively, the women were homemakers, without family poverty, who were less educated (
p = 0.018) and with higher stage of Wagner (
p = 0.000) in workshop attendees and with more disease time development of diabetes in non-participants (
p = 0.016). After 1 year in both groups, habits were improved, except for straight cutting of nails. Stage of Wagner did not increase, nor was there neuropathy in the groups during the previous year.
Conclusions: It is recommended that all primary-level Family Medicine units offer a permanent workshop for education in self-care of diabetic foot accompanied by Family Medical Practice follow-up in monitoring and surveillance of the Podiatry workshop suggestions.
