ABSTRACT
Background: The most common and actually wide spread technique to evaluate the patient’s equilibrium in static condition is the study of the Center of Gravity (COG) projection over the standing surface that evaluates visual, somatosensitive and vestibular systems of equilibrium organization. Objective: To stress the importance of a short but significant evaluation of the vestibular function through test of balance.
Patients and method: We reviewed the clinical charts of all the patients with vertigo and performed the test of balance based on a static platform of 50 x 50 cm that has four pressure sensors (one in each corner) with a range of force from 0 to 100 kg each. We included 70 women (mean age 49.78 years) and 30 men (mean age 57.20 years).
Results: Fourty percent of patients had tinnitus. The most frequent symptom of vertigo was lift sensation, followed by slope sensation and fall and dizziness.
Conclusions: The test of balance is a useful technique of investigation for the visocortical, somatosensory and vestibular functions in cases of vertigo as well as a significant test to scrutinize peripheral, central and combined vestibular systems.
