ABSTRACT
Epilepsy is a central nervous system disorder characterized by spontaneous and recurrent seizures associated with increased and abnormal synchronization of neuronal electrical activity. Many factors contribute to the appearance of an epileptic condition, but neural mechanisms are not well known yet and still there are several aspects to study and discover regarding the physiopathology of epilepsy. There have been several efforts to classify epilepsy and epileptic seizures in order to unify criteria for diagnosis and treatment, however still there is confusion and discrepancy in some epilepsy-related terminology. This review aims to provide the basic concepts, obtained from clinical and basic data, in order to get a better understanding of this disorder.
