Conceptos básicos de la epilepsia

RESUMEN
La epilepsia es una alteración del sistema nervioso central caracterizada por crisis recurrentes y espontáneas, causadas por un incremento y sincronización anormales de la actividad eléctrica neuronal. Si bien la epilepsia es de origen multifactorial, los mecanismos neurales que la originan aún no se conocen con detalle, y todavía hay varios aspectos por estudiar y descubrir respecto a su fisiopatología. A pesar de que se han realizado varios esfuerzos con la finalidad de clasificar la epilepsia y las crisis epilépticas, para uniformar criterios para su diagnóstico y tratamiento, aún existe confusión o discrepancia en ciertos términos. Esta revisión pretende brindar al lector los conceptos básicos, obtenidos a partir de la clínica y de la investigación básica, para lograr un mejor entendimiento de este padecimiento.
