ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare changes in patients’ hearing after stapedectomy.
Patients and method: Intra-group before-after study. Whit informed consent and approval by ethics committee investigation, we included 16 patients with otosclerosis candidates to stapedectomy, underwent surgery for the first time. The average hearing thresholds of the mid frequencies (500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz) were identified. Before and one month after surgery, the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults questionnaire was applied. The results of the measurements before and after surgery were compared using ANOVA and Tukey test with a confidence level of 95%.
Results: From 16 patients, 11 were female and 5 male, average age of 39 years (SD ± 10). With average of mid-frequency before surgery of 60 dB HL and control in one month after of 36 dB HL, with an average gain of 24 dB HL. The scores of the questionnaire before-after shows that stapedectomy improves hearing (p ‹ 0.01).
Conclusions: The hearing loss secondary to otosclerosis changes after surgery. The social and emotional condition detected by the Hearing Adult Handicap Inventory questionnaire improved after surgery.
