ABSTRACT
The cerebellum is part of the Central Nervous System in all vertebrates. It is related to the co-ordination, adjustment and control of movement, to the modulation of information originated in the spinal cord and brainstem. In addition, motor learning is due to synaptic neuroplasticity mechanisms in the cerebellar cortex and deep nuclei. Other research have shown that the cerebellum is active during events that do not involve the control of movement. Thus, the purpose of this review is to show current proposals on how the cerebellum participates in controlling voluntary movement, motor learning as well as cognitive and emotional aspect of behavior.
