ABSTRACT
Objective: To characterize the behavior of colposcopic results from women who presented HPV diagnosis determined by biopsy in Camagüey Municipality during the period going from 2009 to 2010.
Method: A longitudinal study was performed at the Ana Betancourt de Mora School-Hospital during the years of 2009 and 2010. The sample included 159 women belonging to the mentioned heading locality who presented HPV diagnosis obtained through biopsy. The main colposcopic findings were determined and correlated to the cyto-histological diagnoses. The results were expressed in absolute and relative numbers and displayed in charts, graphics, and text.
Results: The 42.7% of the women had ages ranging from 30 and 39 years. An acetowhite epithelium (AWE) was observed in the 66% of the aforementioned women, who were studied by colposcopy. The cytologic and colposcopic diagnosis matched in the 80.5 of the cases. The 76% of the women with HPV diagnosis as the single lesion and the 67.4% of them, associated with a CIN (Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia) I, were related to AB epithelium as the colposcopic result. In the sick women with NIC II, there was no prevalence of any colposcopic findings.
Conclusions: The infection by HPV prevailed in the women being between 30 and 39 years old. The colposcopic finding that presented the highest incidence was the AB epithelium. Over half of the colposcopic results confirmed the cytological diagnosis. Most of the women with HPV cytological diagnosis as the only lesion and associated with a CIN I were related to the AB epithelium as the colposcopic result. In those cases where HPV was observed to be connected to a CIN II, the prevalence of an abnormal colposcopic finding was not evident.
