Oxidative stress and diabetes mellitus

ABSTRACT
A review on how oxidative stress influences the onset of complications in the chronic patient suffering from diabetes mellitus was carried out. In diabetes there is an increased production of free radicals for oxygen and nitrogen, mainly, in essence which, chronic hyperglycemia is responsible for in individuals affected by metabolic disease, especially, those who have no optimal metabolic control, and this is also accompanied by reduced natural antioxidant defenses. Thus, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species affect different tissues and organs of the body in diabetic patients and contribute to the development of retinopathy, nephropathy and diabetic neuropathy. They are also involved in the occurrence of malformations in diabetic pregnant women. The best treatment to avoid the increased oxidative stress in diabetics and, consequently, the occurrence of chronic complications, would be the scope of optimal metabolic control, but some natural and artificial antioxidants can also be used as a therapy.
