ABSTRACT
Introduction. In the nineteenth century developed intravenous therapy. Intravascular devices have brought benefits in the treatment of patients. There is now channeling peripheral venous access, short term vascular catheters or ports. However, these benefits may also pose health problems ranging from phlebitis to bacteriemias.
General objetive. Identify the most frequent causes of nosocomial infections in the use of catheters for short and long term in the CECan.
Material and methods. Were revised, in January 2006 to July 2009, the catheters placed in patients hospitalized in pediatric oncology and adult oncology, according to the type of catheter, residence time and its possible association with phlebitis or bacteriemias, by a tour guide designed exprofeso and review of medical charts.
Results. 11.993 peripheral catheters were installed, which had a duration of ‹ 72 hours in 80.5% of cases of phlebitis and a rate of 2.0 per 1000 catheters installed. In short duration catheters, in 23.1% of cases were observed and all association with bacteriemia accounted oncopediatrics. 99 ports were placed vascular retreated 40% due to death of the patient, bacteriemia, malfunction and / or abandonment of treatment.
Discusion. The presence of phlebitis and bacteriemia appears to be rather associated with the installation technique to handling the time spent. The germs found in contrast to other hospitals were, mostly, enterobacteriaceae, a large positive cocci and fungi.
