ABSTRACT
Surgical resection of pulmonary metastases is an effective therapeutic tool in certain tumors. Although hematogenous route is the most common form of metastatic spread, as there are other ways of lymphatic, retrograde fashion from the mediastinal and hilar lymph, reach the lung. Currently complete excision surgery of lung metastases is considered a standard technique in selected patients with low morbidity and an increased survival of these. Prognostic factors determining survival are: location and stage of primary tumor, disease-free interval, resectability, the degree of lymph node, the number of operations, the number of metastasis and bilaterality, the size of the largest resected metastasis , type of resection, tumor doubling time and histological type. The histologic types most frequently causing pulmonary metastases are colorectal cancer, breast cancer, osteogenic sarcoma soft, renal cell tumors, gynecological tumors and tumors of head and neck. In these germcell tumors are better prognosis, and melanoma the worst.
