ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the usefulness of fiberscope with work-channel to obtain biopsies in the diagnosis of larynx cancer.
Material and methods: Samples were obtained with flexible endoscope and work-channel from patients with laryngeal tumors who assisted to external consultation at Hospital Central Sur, Petroleos Mexicanos, from March 2003 to May 2006. Results were compared to histopathological findings with biopsy by direct microlaryngoscopy or tumoral resection.
Results: Twenty samples were obtained with work-channel, from which direct laryngoscopy plus biopsy or tumor resection was done in 15 patients. Histopathological results of biopsies with workchannel vs those obtained by direct laryngoscopy agreed in 93.3% of cases.
Conclusions: Obtaining biopsies from laryngeal lesions by fiberscope with workchannel give enough material to establish a certain diagnosis; besides, avoids complications due to anesthesia or surgeries.
