ABSTRACT
Background: In Mexico colorectal carcinoma represents 7.4% of tumor-related deaths per year. Published data in recent decades has shown an increase in the incidence of 17% for colon carcinoma and 75% for rectal carcinoma in patients younger than 40 years, for both American and Hispanic population.
Objectives: To know the frequency of colorectal carcinoma at University Hospital Dr. Eleuterio Gonzalez, as well as to compare clinicalpathological parameters among three groups of patients. To determine if there are differences in patients younger than 51 years with colorectal carcinoma in right or left localization and in patients older than 50 years with tumors in any localization of colon.
Material and method: Radical colectomies for colorectal cancer were retrieved from the archives of the service of Anatomy Pathologic and Citopathology of the University Hospital in the period from 1980 to 2000, the cases were clasified as follows: Group:I patients over 50 years with tumor location on the right side. Group II: patients under 51 years with tumors of left location. Group III: patients over 50 years with the tumor in any segment of the colon; a comparison of the clinical-pathological parameters between groups was made.
Results: 90 cases were analyzed, 36 patients (40%) were below 51 years. In group II 68.1% were males, the other groups had an equal sex distribution. For group I patients, the correlation with histologic grade was
p = 0.021, where the most were poorly differentiated tumors.
Conclusions: Almost half of the patients (40%) were under 51 years old, this percentage is higher compared to other reports in Mexico and around the world. The differences found in groups were given by the location of the tumor.
