ABSTRACT
Objective: In a cross sectional design, we studied the association in frequency, specificity and serum levels of anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL) and antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in women on reproductive age.
Material and methods: We evaluated aCL and ANA in three groups of women: non pregnant women blood donors (group 1), pregnant women with low perinatal (group 2), and women with recurrent pregnancy loss (group 3).
Results: We included 567 women, with 236, 175 and 156 cases, per group. The aCL prevalence was 2.5, 0.6, and 25.6% for each group, with greater frequency in group 3 patients
vs group 1 and group 2 cases (OR 13.2 CI 95% 5.45-32.0 and OR 60.0. CI 95% 8.13-442.0). The frequency of ANA was 18.6, 10.3 and 34.6%, with differences between group 3
vs group 1 (OR 2,3. CI 95% .4-3.6), and group 2 (OR 4,6, CI 95% 2.5-8.3). Women with aCL IgG were more likely to have ANA positive (OR 14,3. CI 95 % 6.1-33.0) and anti-ssDNA (OR 17,4. CI 95% 7.8-38.8). Pregnant women showed no increased prevalence of autoantibodies.
Conclusions: The frequency of ACA and ANA was greater in women with recurrent pregnancy loss. ANA reactive cases were at low concentrations and are part of natural autoantibodies repertoire.
