ABSTRACT
In 1824 gastric polyps were first described and in 1965 they were differentiated from other mucosa growths. They can be hyperplastic or adenomatous. Their importance is their possible transformation in cancer.
A prospective study was carried out between 1996 and 1998. Panendoscopy was performed in 1622 patients with various symptoms from hemorrhage to functional distress. Thirty cases with polyps were found (1.84%), 10 in male and 20 in female patients, 60% in the stomach vertical portion, 30% in the antrum and only 10% in the fundus. No malignancies were detected, 66.6% showed chronic gastritis, 13.3% showed hyperplasia and 10% metaplasia.
These data are not unlike most of reports and predominate in the fifth decade.
