ABSTRACT
In order to know the prevalence of
Aspergillus colonization of the upper tract airways in cancer patients a prospective study was performed. One hundred patients hospitalized at the Hospital Anexo de Pediatría (N = 68) and at the Hospital de Pediatría (N = 32) from the Centro Médico “Siglo XXI” were included. One sample from the nose of each patient was taken and cultured on Sabouraud slants. Prevalence of
Aspergillus colonization was 7%;
Aspergillus niger was the species most commonly isolated.
Increased risk of colonization was noted for leukemic patients hospitalized at the Hospital Anexo, and those under chemotherapy and antibiotic treatment, but without statistical significative difference; time of evolution of underlying diseases resulted as a risk statistically significative (Kruskal-Wallis, p = 0.043).
