ABSTRACT
Sexually transmitted infections (STI) other than HIV/AIDS certainly constitute an important health care area as well. This is true not only for high risk behavioral groups, but also for those individuals considered at a low risk for the acquisition of STI, specially when they become in contact with core group people. On the other hand, due to the lack of resources in Mexico for the proper atention, control and study of STI in health clinics and hospitals, there is a particular need to establish appropriate facilities such as specific, private medical offices; availability of syndromic algorithms to aid in clinical diagnosis when possible, minimally supplied laboratories to confirm etiologic agents and also trained professionals able to accomplish the required public health work in regard to the recognition, treatment and follow up of STI cases in the population. As far as this manuscript is concerned, it is aiming to provide the reader with a brief update of some STI prevalence studies carried out in our country for different population groups, during the last several years.
