ABSTRACT
The solitary thyroid nodule is a localized growth of the thyroid gland, it is usually a benign lesion and its prevalence in the general population ranges from 4 to 7%. Even though thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine tumor, it only represents 1% of all cancers and 5% of all thyroid nodules.
The clinical diagnostic and therapeutic evaluation of patients with thyroid nodules consists in a complete history taking, physical examination and laboratory analyses including thyroid function tests.
The fine needle aspiration biopsy is the main diagnostic procedure in the evaluation of patients with a solitary thyroid nodule, because it can identify between a benign lesion and a malignant one. Its advantages are: it is a safe procedure, with the pathology report one can decide which patients will be sent to surgical treatment, it can be performed in out patients and it lowers medical costs.
The surgical indications for patients with a thyroid nodule are: malignant or suspicious lesions, local symptoms of compression and obstruction as well as recurrent thyroid cysts. Total and near total thyroidectomy, and the use of ablative doses of I-131 are the best procedures used in the management of thyroid cancer.
